This was the first airport I flew to as a private pilot with a passenger! This airports also special to me because it was where I completed my first ever cross country!
My ratings
Approach and landing: ★★★★★
Runway 29R, straight in with not much wind coming from the coast straight to land is one of the most beautiful approaches I’ve ever experienced.
Airport services: ★★★★★
There are three main FBO’s if you plan on staying an extended period of time but they have a large transient parking, as well as a nice pilot lounge facility.
Welcome factor: ★★★★★
Day trip potential: ★★★★★
There are so many places that you can reach with just a quick drive you can be at Redondo or Hermosa beach, with a wide variety of options for shopping and dinner!
Food nearby: ★★★☆☆
The food right near the airport is not as amazing if you’re just trying to make a quick stop. You would have to be willing to walk, but if you decide to Uber or rent a car then you have quick access to much better options.
Overall: ★★★★★
Final thoughts…
Best runway and pattern entry: Both runways are good options for small aircraft but runway 29L/11R is about 2,000 feet shorter and a bit narrower.
Recommendation?: I would highly recommend going to Torrance for a quick day trip as it provides access to a much larger area without the stress of being too close to the Los Angeles Bravo. If you want to explore a little version of LA that has a more relaxed vibe, then I would highly recommend Redondo Beach! I plan on returning because I just love how the airport provides access to such a large area and the flight there is extremely beautiful!
